Best National Parks And Wildlife Sanctuaries Of India
Despite the relentless growth of its population, India as a country and the various governments at national and state level are doing an excellent job of protecting the remains vestiges of natural habitat which exist across the length and breadth of the country.
From the densely-forested slopes and highlands of the Western Ghats in Kerala, to the furthest reaches of the north-eastern states, into the high plateaux of the Himalaya and at many points in between, there is a vast network on National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. While not all have accessibility or proper infrastructure for visitors, there are many which do and where you can combine great hospitality, luxurious accommodation and superb wildlife viewing opportunities in a single package.
For tiger-sightings, it’s hard to beat the famous Parks of Madhya Pradesh- Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura and more. None of these are particularly simple to reach, requiring a bit of effort (flying/driving) so if you’re looking to simply make a small diversion with the chance of a tiger sighting then Ranthambore (near to Jaipur) or Nagarhole (not far off a few major tour routes in South India) are worth considering.
In a handful of places in Kerala and Karnataka, tigers and elephants live in close proximity in the same National Park. Gujarat is home to the last remaining population of Asiatic lions, while leopards, even though they are notoriously elusive, are probably best seen at Bera, not far from Udaipur in Rajasthan. Indian rhinoceroses are thriving on the great grasslands of Kaziranga National Park in the north-east.
