Occupying the royal terra of Kodagu and Mysore, Nagarhole means “Serpentine Rivulets” - ‘Naga’ is Snake and ‘Hole’ is streams or small rivers. The erstwhile royal hunting grounds of the Wodeyar Dynasty rose to the status of a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1955 and became a National Park in 1988. Nagarhole became the 37th Tiger Reserve in India in 1999 and has a chance to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site soon.
