The ancient Dravidian Culture of the place has given it prominence. Madurai is the place where the greatest poet Nakkerrar laid the foundation of Tamil language. The place was ruled by the Pandaya dynasty and served as their realm. During their sovereignty the development of cultural heritage as well as commercial trading was at its peak.

Meenakshi Amman Temple

It is among the most popular South Indian temples. This holy place is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi. This place of worship is situated in the midst of the city. The 12 towers of the temple are its most impressive features. It has 5 entrances.

One can find 4 entrances built according to the four major directions East, West North & South. All round the year, the temple hoists several festivals. The towers contain impressive art works and paintings. Inside the temple itself, there are thousands of pillars. During festivals the whole temple gets illuminated with wonderful lights.

Thirumalai Nayak Palace

The foundation of this palace was laid by King Thirumalai Nayak. The building that is still observable was the resident of the King Nayak. The throne of the king has been kept for display. The palace was alienated into two divisions, Swarga Vilasam and Ranga Vilasam. The style as well as architecture of the palace comprises of Dravidian, European and Islamic design. Huge circular pillars surround the courtyard of the palace. Visitors can observe the light shows as well as stories representing Nayak's life in the evening.

Gandhi Museum

This museum was constructed in the honor of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Here a visitor can see many images depicting the peace movements, freedom struggle articles used by Gandhi Ji .

Thiruparankundram Temple

This holy palace is among the six abodes dedicated to Lord Murugan. It was constructed by carving the rocks. The statues of Lord Shiva & Lord Vishnu facing each other in the main temple are the specialty of this shrine that is rarely found in Hindu shrines.
