North Indian City Guide - Uttarakhand - Mussoorie
Situated on the foothills of the Himalaya, and one of several hill stations dubbed ‘Queen of Hills’ (both Shimla and Darjeeling are sometimes afforded this description as well), Mussoorie was established by a British army office in the 1820s. Of course one of the prime reasons the British colonialists were in this part of India was hunting, and it perhaps pays not to dwell too long on what has been lost here over the past couple of centuries. The region’s scenic beauty however, remains and the views from Camel’s Back Road down into the Doon Valley are impressive to say the least.
Mussoorie - City Guide
A well-established destination these days, Mussoorie offers plenty of activities and walks to view-points and waterfalls are plentiful.Mussoorie’s highest peak, Tal Tibba (2290m) offers the best view of the Himalaya and the overall area. The second highest peak of Mussoorie, ‘Gun Hill’ is a popular historical spot- here cannon were fired here to denote the time of day.
Another place of historical note is Sir George Everest’s home, from where yet more great views are to be Museum, which attracts people with historical and adventurous interest. It is the house of the Welsh Surveyor and geographer after whom the highest peak of the world is named.
Mussoorie is also famous for “Happy Valley”, the first Tibetan settlement of India. As the name denotes, the valley is known for its serene and peaceful ambience.
