Day Tour - Madurai – Chettinad

Madurai, the most renowned city in southern part of Tamil Nadu is acclaimed as the city with the longest surviving civilization and cultural practices. Madurai is also called as the “sleepless city” as the city is vibrantly live round the clock with its bustling markets and other shopping areas.

Madurai is most popular for the grandest Meenakshi Amman Temple with Lord Shiva in the name of Sundareswarar and His consort Meenakshi Amman, blessing His devotees. It will be surprising to know that the entire city of Madurai is around the temple with the sanctum of Goddess Meenakshi as the epicenter.

Chettinad, which is at a distance of 87kms from Madurai can be reached in less than two hours’ drive. Chettinad is popular for its palatial buildings which were once the royal residences of the business community called Chettiars. The house with one thousand windows is still popular in this area. As successive generations of this community have migrated from this place, most of these houses are unoccupied and few of them have been modified as heritage hotels.

During your tour to Chettinad, you can visit these regal architectures and give a try on the world renowned Chettinad cuisine. If time permits, you can visit the nearby village Athangudi . Making of hand made tiles can be seen in this village.

After visiting all the places, you can drive back to Madurai. Remainder of the day is free for you to shop or to retire at hotel.
